W2 Professorship for life in “Ophthalmology with a focus on corneal and ocular surface diseases“
The position is as a professor in an employee relationship in accordance with Section 102 Paragraph 5 of the Berlin University Act (BerlHG). The teaching obligation is based on the Teaching Obligation Ordinance for Berlin Universities (LVVO). The professorship is associated with senior physician activity at the Department of Ophthalmology and therefore requires many years of clinical experience as a doctor as well as extensive surgical training and experience in the area of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye and in the field of pediatric ophthalmology. The implementation of the advertised professorship is intended to consolidate and further develop a scientific focus in the area of the anterior segment of the eye in research, teaching and patient care. We are looking for a nationally and internationally clinically and scientifically recognized personality in the field of ophthalmology who will carry out clinical-related scientific projects as part of their clinical work. In addition to the senior physician’s clinical and surgical activities, a special focus is on coordinating the interdisciplinary care of patients with diseases of the ocular surface in collaboration with colleagues from hematology and oncology, pediatrics, infectiology and immunology.
The professorship includes the following requirements:
1) Representation of the subject “Ophthalmology with focus on corneal and ocular surface diseases” in
Research, teaching and healthcare in compliance with the standards of robust,
reproducible, transparent and responsible science, including the
Consideration of gender and diversity.
2) Many years of clinical experience as a doctor and extensive surgical training and experience
in the area of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye as well as in the area of pediatric ophthalmology.
3) Proven expertise in the field of diagnostics and therapy of severe ocular surface diseases including corneal and tissue transplantation.
4) Proven expertise in the field of immunological and infectious diseases of the front and
posterior segment and in the interdisciplinary care of children and adults with complex
immunological and oncological diseases
5) Experience in managing clinical trials
6) Experience in personnel management and development
7) Appropriate national and international reputation in the research field, demonstrated by
appropriate publication achievements and successful acquisition of third-party funding and
joint projects.
8) Profound teaching experience, excellent didactic skills and willingness to actively
Contribute to the design of the study programs offered at the Charité and ensure a sound
postgraduate education and training and commitment to the promotion of young medical professionals
and scientists, also in an international context.
9) Integration into relevant research areas and research networks of the Charité and in
cross-faculty research networks / graduate schools as well as in the future-oriented
Charité’s strategic initiatives (Charité 2030) and Charité Internationalization Strategy).
10) Cooperation with the preclinical and clinical facilities of the Charité and other institutions in
Berlin and Brandenburg
Applicants must demonstrate through their previous scientific work that they meet the above-mentioned expectations of the W2 professorship and that they actively contribute to the scientific activities in the field of ophthalmology and complement the existing research activities in these areas at the Charité.
Requirements for employment: Successfully completed university degree in accordance with Section 100 of the BerlHG and a completed doctorate in human medicine, professorship or junior professorship or habilitation and teaching authorization or scientific achievements equivalent to habilitation. In addition, completed further training as a specialist in ophthalmology or comparable completed further training as a specialist doctor must be available.
