W 3 Endowed Professorship for “Rare Retinal Diseases” (f/m/d)

The endowed professorship is held by Dr. Rolf M. Schwiete Foundation in cooperation with the University Hospital Mannheim GmbH, represents the subject of “rare retinal diseases” in health care, research and teaching and is entrusted with the management of the clinical section “Rare Retinal Diseases”, which is assigned to the eye clinic of the University Hospital Mannheim is.

The personality sought should be internationally proven in pathogenesis, diagnostics including phenotyping, relevant molecular genetics and possible therapeutic approaches in the area of ​​rare retinal diseases. Sound practical experience in the clinical management of affected children, adults and their families is expected in order to be able to further develop modern care for affected patients through scientific projects and clinical studies. A particular focus of the position is on the translation of scientific evidence into practice, including the establishment of registries and the implementation of clinical studies, especially including ocular imaging. In research, the ability to connect to one or more of the faculty’s research priorities and cross-sectional areas, in particular vascular biology and medicine, translational neuroscience and medical technology as well as preventive medicine, is required. In teaching, participation in the design and further development of teaching in ophthalmology is also expected as part of the MaReCuM model course.

The prerequisites for applying are a completed university degree in medicine, a qualified doctorate and pedagogical aptitude, which is usually proven through experience in teaching. In addition, additional academic achievements (habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or habilitation-equivalent achievements) in accordance with Section 47 Paragraph 2 of the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act as well as recognition as a specialist in ophthalmology must be provided. Internationally visible, excellent achievements in research, teaching and health care, relevant management experience, successful acquisition of third-party funding and didactic competence are expected, as are the ability to cooperate and lead and commitment to academic self-administration.

The position is available for an unlimited period. Professors who perform tasks in health care in a university hospital are generally employed in a permanent employment relationship under private law in accordance with Section 49 Paragraph 2a of the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act. The professorship is associated with the management of the clinical section “Rare Retinal Diseases” in the eye clinic of the University Hospital Mannheim GmbH. A separate contract will be concluded with the Universitätsklinikum Mannheim GmbH regarding this.
