Berlin – The internal government discussions on the law to deal with sexual abuse in Germany are still ongoing. According to earlier information from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs (BMFSFJ), the draft was actually supposed to be approved by the Federal Cabinet today.
Regarding the delay, the ministry said dpa-Request with: “We are still in the departmental coordination phase with the law and are working hard to have the law passed by the cabinet before the summer break.” The original cabinet date of May 22 had already been rejected.
The abuse commissioner Kerstin Claus has criticized the postponement several times in the past. She has been urging for some time not to put off the law. Claus demanded that the law be passed in the Bundestag “by the first quarter of 2025 at the latest.” This is important in order to be able to support affected children and young people better than before.
The law is intended to improve the investigation of sexual abuse of children and young people nationwide. To this end, new structures are to be created that will not only solve cases but also enable better prevention. Support for those affected is to be expanded and the office of the abuse commissioner is to be upgraded.
The law also provides for a reporting obligation on the work of the abuse commissioner to the Bundestag and the Bundesrat. In future, it will be possible for the abuse commissioner – similar to the Federal Commissioner for the Armed Forces, for example – to submit an annual report to the two constitutional bodies. This report could then include particular grievances and aspects requiring urgent action. © dpa/aerzteblatt.de
