The following position is to be filled at the Department of Ophthalmology at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin at the earliest possible date:

Professorship for Intraocular Tumors with a focus on Retinoblastoma
Salary group W2 BBesG ÜfBE – for life (reference number: Prof. 659/2024)

The position is as a professor in an employment relationship according to Section 102 Paragraph 5 of the Berlin University Act (BerlHG). The teaching obligation is based on the Teaching Obligation Ordinance for Berlin Universities (LVVO).

Applications are expressly welcome from people with expertise in a wide range of areas, such as adult intraocular tumors, whose research achievements are documented by relevant publications and other scientific achievements appropriate to their career stage.

The professorship includes the following requirements

1. Representation of the subject “Intraocular Tumors – Retinoblastoma” in research, teaching and healthcare, observing the standards of robust, reproducible, transparent and responsible science, including consideration of gender and diversity.

2. The professorship is linked to a senior physician position at the eye clinic and therefore requires many years of experience as a senior physician as well as comprehensive surgical training and experience in the area of ​​the anterior and posterior segment of the eye and in the area of ​​pediatric ophthalmology.

3. The clinical and scientific focus of the professorship is on the diagnosis and treatment of intraocular tumors with a particular emphasis on the field of retinoblastomas – including radiotherapy and surgical care.

4. Experience as a senior physician at a center specializing in intraocular tumors is a given. Likewise, experience in the interdisciplinary treatment of patients in collaboration with radiation therapists, oncologists, and pediatric oncologists.

5. Appropriate international reputation in the research field, demonstrated by appropriate publication achievements and successful acquisition of third-party funding and collaborative projects.

6. Experience in managing clinical studies and translational (collaborative) research projects is desirable. We are looking for a researcher with nationally and internationally recognized expertise and networking.

7. Solid teaching experience, excellent teaching skills and a high level of willingness to actively participate in shaping the degree programs offered at the Charité as well as ensuring sound postgraduate training and further education and above-average commitment to promoting young medical professionals and scientists are required. Experience with innovative teaching concepts is desirable.

8. Integration into relevant research areas and research networks of the Charité and into cross-faculty research networks/graduate training groups as well as into the future-oriented strategic initiatives of the Charité (Charité 2030 and Charité Internationalization Strategy).

9. Cooperation with the preclinical and clinical facilities of the Charité and other institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Applicants must demonstrate through their previous scientific work that they meet the above-mentioned expectations of the W2 professorship and that they actively contribute to the scientific activities in the field of intraocular tumors with a focus on retinoblastoma and complement the existing research activities in these areas at the Charité.

Recruitment requirements

According to Section 100 BerlHG, successfully completed university degree and a completed doctorate in human medicine, professorship or junior professorship or habilitation and teaching authorization or scientific achievements equivalent to habilitation. In addition, completed further training as a specialist in ophthalmology must be available. International applicants should be able to present a German language diploma/language certificate (according to the Conference of Ministers of Culture) at C1 level (expert language skills).
