How is ophthalmological research positioned in Germany? Where is there room for improvement and what challenges does the field face? In order to assess how ophthalmological research is positioned in Germany, the DOG Research Working Group asked a group of international experts from research, science management and industry for an assessment. The results of this assessment were published in the journal “Die Ophthalmolgie” at the end of May 2024. The focus of the evaluation was on preclinical, translational and clinical research. An important basis for the assessment was the DOG’s research map, which provides an overview of ophthalmological research.

Conclusion: Research performance in German ophthalmology very good, pioneering role in new technologies

Germany is internationally recognized for its research in ophthalmology. The experts rate the price-performance ratio in particular as excellent. Against the background of the ageing population and the increasing socioeconomic burden, the committee makes the following recommendations:

  • Protection of intellectual property: intensifying activities to protect and exploit research results.
  • Lobbying: Greater involvement of patient representatives to support research.
  • National cooperation: promoting synergies between specialised research institutions.
  • German National Eye Institute: Establishment of a central research institute for ophthalmology.

The experts rate the research performance in German ophthalmology as very good. There is room for improvement in the areas of translation, clinical studies, intellectual property and national cooperation. A central research institute could further strengthen ophthalmology in Germany and make it more internationally competitive.
