The article “Ophthalmological research in Germany: evaluation by an international panel of experts” was published in “Die Ophthalmologie” at the end of May 2024. The main aim of the publication was to evaluate research performance in German ophthalmology and to show the DOG and political decision-makers strategies for future improvements. The focus was on preclinical, translational and clinical research. The evaluation was carried out by an international panel of experts organized by the DOG’s Research Working Group.
Conclusion: Germany is known for its ophthalmological research
Germany is internationally recognized for its research in ophthalmology. In particular, the price-performance ratio was rated as excellent. Against the background of the ageing population and the increasing socioeconomic burden of visual impairment, several goals for future activities were identified:
- Protection of intellectual property: Intensifying activities to protect and exploit research results.
- Lobbying: Greater involvement of patient representatives to support research.
- National cooperation: promoting synergies between specialised research institutions.
- German National Eye Institute: Establishment of a central research institute for ophthalmology.
The expert panel rates the research performance in German ophthalmology as very good. There is room for improvement in the areas of translation, clinical studies, intellectual property and national cooperation. A central research institute could further strengthen ophthalmology in Germany and make it more internationally competitive.
