The IMMediate Advanced Clinician Scientist – Program
The IMMediate Advanced Clinician Scientist (ACS) – Program is a structured qualification program that fosters long-term and reliable career paths to board certified physicians who, in addition to their clinical activities, engage in basic, translational or clinical research in the interdisciplinary field of immunology. IMMediate is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Objectives of the program
- Promoting excellence in research on immune-mediated diseases
- Enabling a flexible combination of research and patient care for board-certified physicians
- Creating an integrative and interdisciplinary network of Advanced Clinician Scientists (ACS)
- Ensuring the scientific and clinical independence of participants by offering prospects for a permanent position in academic medicine
Scientific Focus
- Immunology, oncology, and cell research within the Faculty of Medicine’s profile areas
- Understanding common principles of immune-mediated diseases and advancing mechanistic insights
- Promoting synergies and collaborations between ACS from various disciplines, concentrating on functional, phenotypical and transcriptional analysis of immune reactions

What We Expect
Your Profile:
- Board-certified physician, preferably in a clinical leadership position (eg (functional) senior physician)
- German medical license (Approbation) or permission to practice medicine in Germany
- Proven research profile in immunology aligned with the host department/institute’s goals
- Currently or leading a scientific research group
- Completed habilitation or habilitation expected soon
- Successful acquisition of third-party funds
- Active participation in teaching and mentoring medical students and junior scientists
- Willingness to act as a role model for aspiring clinician scientists
What we expect from your department/institute:
- Funding for clinical position (50%)
- Securing protected time for research (50%)
- Provision of necessary infrastructure and resources
- Ongoing support and long-term career prospects within the department/institute

Please note:
A complete application must include both, the candidate’s submission for the ACS position and a separate recommendation letter/declaration of support from the hosting department/institute. Please follow the content specifications outlined in the respective information sheet.
The application process occurs in two stages:
- Stage 1: Submission of applications by potential ACS candidates working on the topic of immune-mediated diseases. Separate submission of the recommendation letter/declaration of support.
- Stage 2: Pre-selected candidates from stage 1 present their scientific project and career development plan to the Selection Committee. It is mandatory for the director of the hosting department/institute to participate and to answer any questions from the Selection Committee, eg in respect of long-term career endpoints for the ACS in her*his department/institute.
