Hamburg In Hamburg, doctors’ practices can now receive the antibody active ingredient Nirsevimab, which is recommended for RSV immunization, by bulk ordering from pharmacies. This is made possible by a short-term agreement between the health insurance companies in the Hanseatic city and the Hamburg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVHH).

Previously, parents received an individual prescription from their practice and then had to pick up the active ingredient from a pharmacy. The health insurance companies said that the ability to order through the practice now enables babies to be immunized more quickly and efficiently.

Infection with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) often causes infants to suffer from lower respiratory tract disease. Bronchitis and pneumonia can result. Babies with previous illnesses in particular can experience serious illnesses that require hospitalization.

We are pleased that the recommended immunization of babies in Hamburg can now be carried out more unbureaucratically than before, emphasized Kathrin Herbst, head of the Hamburg regional representative of the Association of Substitute Insurance Funds. In this way, we help to protect newborns and infants from serious illnesses and to avoid overloading in doctor’s offices and hospital wards as much as possible.

In September, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) established a right to a one-time immunization with the active ingredient Nirsevimab at health insurance costs for newborns and infants before the age of one, regardless of risk factors. The regulation is based on a corresponding recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO). © EB/aha/aerzteblatt.de
