Intravitreal surgical drug administration (IVOMs) is one of the most frequently performed procedures in ophthalmology. Until now, aggregated data on injection rates and frequencies with anti-VEGF injections were available from other countries. Now data from Germany have been published based on an analysis of the data in oregis, the DOG’s digital register for health services research.

Dr. Julian Alexander Zimmermann, Münster

The question concerned the frequency and drug distribution of intravitreal injections in German centers in the period from 2015 to 2021. For this purpose, the real-world data in oregis were evaluated: the number of patients treated and the drugs applied, aflibercept, bevacizumab, brolucizumab and ranibizumab. The results have now been published in the journal “Die Ophthalmologie” (Volume 121, 196-206) and show that in Germany too, the actual number of IVOMs per patient per year lags behind the frequencies from the approval studies. The change in the use of various anti-VEGF drugs is also particularly interesting, especially against the background of newly approved preparations.

This work underlines the importance of the oregis register for health services research in Germany. Research institutions and supporting organizations, such as data-providing centers, are entitled to submit research inquiries to the register. The author of the publication is Dr. med. Julian Alexander Zimmermann (Münster).
