Munich, November 2024 – From next year, the examination for the European specialist title “Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO)” will also be able to be taken regularly in Germany. The German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) and the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) recently signed a corresponding declaration of intent in Berlin. Accordingly, the FEBO exam should take place every two years – in every odd year – during the DOG Congress in Berlin, while in even years it will take place in Paris as before. By offering to provide another platform for face-to-face examinations, the DOG is helping to promote and consolidate the high standard of ophthalmological treatment throughout Europe at the European level.

The European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) is the European professional society for ophthalmology. It was founded in 1992 with the aim of pooling ophthalmological expertise in the EU countries, Norway and Switzerland. “Through international cooperation, the highest scientific standards in ophthalmology research, teaching and care have been established over the past 30 years,” says DOG Secretary General Professor Dr. med. Claus Cursiefen, who co-signed the current declaration of intent for the DOG.

The examination to become a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) is one of the cornerstones of Europe-wide cooperation. The examination, which lasts several hours and is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part based on case studies, replaces the specialist examination for ophthalmology in various European countries. This is not yet the case in Germany. “For German ophthalmologists, the ‘FEBO’ is proof of a high level of competence. By offering to be able to take this exam in Germany in the future, we are sending a strong signal of European cooperation,” said Professor Dr. med. Siegfried Priglinger, President of the DOG.

The FEBO examination, in which several hundred prospective ophthalmology specialists from all over Europe take part every year, promotes the exchange of knowledge between the affiliated national specialist societies. “The collaboration in the FEBO exam creates an atmosphere of excellence and innovation that radiates across the entire field,” explains the DOG President. By learning from each other across countries, we contribute collectively to progress in ophthalmological research and teaching. “Through the FEBO exam, this progress is directly reflected in ophthalmological care practice,” Cursiefen emphasizes the importance of the exam, “and thus also for our patients.”
