Berlin Thirty-two years after Doctors Without Borders began working in the Russian Federation, the humanitarian aid organization has to stop providing aid in the country. Doctors Without Borders announced this today.

In August of this year, the organization received a letter from the Russian Ministry of Justice with the decision to remove the branch of the non-profit organization Doctors Without Borders (Netherlands) in the Russian Federation from the register of branches and representative offices of foreign NGOs.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to suspend our activities in the Russian Federation, said Yashovardhan, MSF country coordinator in the country. The work of our organization is guided by the principles of independence, impartiality and neutrality, as well as medical ethics, and we provide assistance on the basis of need.

The international medical organization has been present in Russia since 1992. For more than 30 years, it has implemented dozens of programs ranging from helping the homeless and emergency aid to working with the Ministry of Health on innovative tuberculosis treatment.

MSF has been active in various regions of the country: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kemerovo region, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Dagestan and, more recently, Arkhangelsk and Ivanovo regions, as well as in the south of Russia in Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don.

A significant part of MSF’s history in the country has been linked to the implementation of advanced approaches to the treatment of tuberculosis. © EB/aerzteblatt.de
