Madrid After the flood disaster in Spain, the death toll has risen to at least 205. Because people are still missing, a further increase in the number of victims is to be expected, the emergency services announced today.
After extremely heavy rain, numerous places, especially in eastern Spain, were flooded. The Mediterranean region of Valencia is particularly hard hit. According to the local rescue service Cecopi, 202 of the previous fatalities were found there.
Two deaths were reported from the neighboring region of Castile-La Mancha and one from the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. Yesterday the authorities spoke of at least 158 deaths. Dozens of people were still missing. Three days after the floods, however, the hope of finding any survivors is dwindling.
Last Tuesday, extremely heavy rain fell across eastern and southern Spain and flooded streets with muddy water. In some places there was more precipitation than usual in a year. The floods piled cars on top of each other, collapsed bridges and covered entire cities with mud.
Some areas continued to be cut off from power on Friday and were suffering from drinking water and food shortages. Many roads and railway lines are still impassable. The Spanish government increased the number of soldiers deployed as emergency workers in the disaster areas from 1,200 to 1,700. Drones and sniffer dogs are also used to search for the missing people. © afp/aerzteblatt.de
