Beirut – In view of the increased Israeli attacks on the Hezbollah militia, the Lebanese Ministry of Health has ordered hospitals in the south and east of the country to cancel all non-urgent operations.

The order is necessary “to make room to treat the injured as a result of the escalating Israeli aggression against Lebanon,” the Health Ministry in Beirut said today.

The Lebanese Ministry of Education has ordered the closure of state and private schools in the south and east of Lebanon, as well as in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut, for today and tomorrow. The current security situation poses a danger on the way to school, said ministry head Abbas Halabi.

The Israeli army had previously announced that it would carry out “more extensive and precise attacks against terror targets spread throughout Lebanon.” Civilians in Lebanese villages “who are in or near buildings and areas used by Hezbollah for military purposes” should immediately seek safety, army spokesman Daniel Hagari said at a press conference.

According to the Lebanese news agency National News Agency (NNA) People in the capital Beirut and other areas of Lebanon received messages on their landline phones telling Israel to seek safety. The NNA report described the warning messages as “part of psychological warfare.”

The conflict between Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah has escalated significantly in recent days. In an air strike in Beirut, the Israeli army killed several high-ranking Hezbollah commanders and also announced the destruction of thousands of rocket launchers in southern Lebanon. The pro-Iranian Hezbollah, for its part, expanded its attacks to northern Israel over the weekend.

Even before the killing of the Hezbollah commanders and the violent mutual attacks at the weekend, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah had escalated due to the explosions of hundreds of the militia’s pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon. Hezbollah blames Israel for the explosions. Israel itself has not commented on the authorship of the explosions, which killed 39 people and injured around 3,000 others. © afp/aerzteblatt.de
