Berlin Several German social associations are jointly pushing for more money from the federal government to adapt nursing homes, hospitals and daycare centers to climate change.

An energetic renovation of the facilities is necessary in order to achieve the climate goals and to protect older and sick people from increasing heat, according to the statement from the Climate Alliance Germany, the AWO, Caritas, Diakonie and the Parittic Association.

The associations state that a large part of the more than 100,000 buildings in the social sector and healthcare sector will have to be modernized in the coming years. The facilities would not be able to cover the necessary investments themselves. The alliance is therefore in favor of an investment program.

We demand tailor-made solutions from the federal government with significantly lower contributions and higher funding volumes, the statement quotes the President of the Federal Association of Independent Welfare and Workers’ Welfare, Michael Gro.

This will not work without additional financial resources, argues Diakonie’s social director, Maria Loheide, which is why we consider a reform of the debt brake to be unavoidable. © dpa/aerzteblatt.de
